Tube

Today I checked my supplies of paint, to see what new paint I have to order next week, so I thought it appropriate to paint a tube of paint for todays daily painting.

Heute habe ich einmal meine Farbenvorräte überprüft, um zu sehen welche Farben ich nächste Woche wieder neu bestellen muss und da fand ich es nur passend auch gleich eine Farbtube fürs heutige Tagesbild zu malen.

Staged

As much as I like to work with those brief accidental encounters on the street that are so often the motif for my paintings, I as well treasure the work in my studio with a model, where I can stage the motif, work with lighting. For my next studio I would wish to have more space for that, more light, I even consider to get some theatrical lighting equipment to be able to realise those yet unfulfilled visions.

So sehr ich es mag mit diesen spontanen zufälligen Begebenheiten auf der Straße zu arbeiten, die so oft als Motiv für meine Bilder dienen, so sehr schätze ich aber auch die Arbeit in meinem Atelier mit einem Model, wobei ich das Motiv inszenieren, mit Licht arbeiten kann, etc. Für mein nächstes Atelier würde ich mir mehr Platz für diese Inszenierungen wünschen, sowie mehr Licht, ich überlege sogar mir spezielles Bühnenbeleuchtungsequipment zu kaufen um diese bisher unerfüllten Visionen dann zu realisieren.

Garage

It looks a bit like the lock up of Arthur Daley in West London. But it is actually a garage in Upper Fair Meadow, Berlin, industrial estate.

Es sieht ein bisschen aus wie der Verschlag von Arthur Daley in West London. Tatsächlich handelt es sich aber um eine Werkstatt in Oberschöneweide, Berlin, Industriegelände.

Imbiss

Important meeting points in any industrial area are those little trailers that offer sausages, sandwiches, coffee and tea, and maybe something stronger, depending on the time of day, and general situation etc.

Wichtige Treffpunkte in jedem Industriegebiet sind diese Imbiss Wägen, die Würstchen, Brote, Kaffee und Tee und manchmal auch Stärkeres anbieten, je nach Tageszeit und der generellen Stimmung, etc.

Lager Nr. 5

Exploring the grounds of the industrial estate in Upper Fair Meadow, Lager Nr. 5, one lamp transforming the scene into a near abstract experience.

Die Umgebung der Industrieanlagen in Oberschöneweide, Lager Nr. 5, eine Lampe verändert die Szenerie in eine fast abstrakte Anmutung.

Upper fair meadow

Upper fair meadow... the title is a rough translation of the name of an area in Berlin called Oberschöneweide. An area at the river Spree, like the Museumsinsel, but yet completely different. Europe's biggest industrial landscape, hardly a beautiful pasture, but then again with the lights of the chimneys, and the bridges reflecting at night in the water, suddenly something very beautiful appears.

Upper fair meadow ... das ist die grobe Übersetzung für einen Stadtteil in Berlin mit dem Namen Oberschöneweide. Ein Areal an der Spree, nicht unähnlich der Museumsinsel und doch ganz anders. Die größte Industrielandschaft Europas, also kaum eine schöne Weidelandschaft, aber es hat etwas, die Lichter der Schornsteine, die Brücken, die sich nachts im Wasser spiegeln, und so erscheint mit einem Mal doch etwas sehr Schönes.

Im Gespräch

I could not think of a more appropriate place for a serious conversation than next to the massive columns of the Cathedral, like these two gentlemen have chosen.
Sicher ein passender Platz für eine ernste Unterhaltung, hier, neben den mächtigen Säulen des Doms, wo sich diese beiden Herren niedergelassen hatten.

The aftermath

After a few hours the scene relaxed a bit. It was now the time that people left the restaurants, to be met by a rather surreal picture, police cars and ambulances still driving on the wrong side of the road ( well at least in this part of the world ) was there still more to come, or was that it ? PS: many of you asked me what happened with the man in the gutter. He was helped immediately by protesters and police, for that moment all differences seemed to be forgotten, and the ambulance arrived very soon....

Ein paar Stunden später beruhigte sich das Ganze etwas. Es war nun um die Zeit als Leute aus Restaurants kamen und eine ziemlich surreale Atmosphäre vorfanden, von der sie bisher nur wenig mitbekommen htten, Polizei- und Krankenwägen fuhren immer noch auf der falschen Straßenseite (falsch zumindest in diesem Teil der Welt), würde es weitergehen mit der Demonstration, oder war es das jetzt?
PS: Viele von Ihnen fragten mich, was denn mit dem Mann, der zusammengebrochen war, geschah. Ihm wurde sofort von Demonstranten und Polizisten geholfen, für den Moment schienen hier alle Differenzen vergessen, der Notarzt kam ebenfalls sehr schnell ...

A normal Thursday night

Just a normal Thursday night, but then it all changed. It went quiet outside... that is not normal on a busy road with four lanes, suddenly no cars, no busses no tram... all still. Only blue flashlights reflecting in the windows of the houses. And then the madness started. The Rosenthaler Street cordoned off by police cars in one line. The whole place in a state of anticipation. Somewhere the rhythmic shouting of a nearby protest march... a man lying in the gutter with an epileptic fit, suddenly the crowd broke loose, bottles flying, people running, just a normal Thursday night... it took a very long time till I found some sleep on that night.... thinking of the man lying in the gutter...

Ein normaler Donnerstagabend und dann änderte sich alles. Draussen war es merkwürdig still ... ungewöhnlich still, für eine stark befahrene, vierspurige Strasse, auf einmal fuhr dort kein einziges Auto mehr, weder Busse noch Straßenbahnen kamen durch ... alles ruhig. Blaulichter, die in den Häuserfenstern reflektierten. Und dann begann der Wahnsinn. Die Rosenthaler Strasse war durch Reihen von Polizeiwägen völlig abgesperrt. Die ganze Umgebung lag im Stadium gespannter Erwartung. Von irgendwoher drangen die rhythmischen Spruchchöre einer nahen Demonstration herüber ... ein Mann lag auf dem Trottoir und hatte einen epileptischen Anfall, auf einmal kam die Menge näher, brach los, Flaschen flogen, Menschen rannten vorbei, nur ein normaler Donnerstagabend ... ich konnte ewig nicht einschlafen in dieser Nacht ... ich musste immer wieder an den Mann, der zu Boden gegangen war, denken.

Brunnenstrasse

It is hard to believe that only the night before, this place was filled with 600 policemen, police cars and a helicopter above them. The only clue this morning was a bit of broken glass on the pavement, a few camera teams, and a complete house without windows, the rest was business as usual, people going for a coffee and looking though the windows of countless galleries. Madness and normality, sometimes only divided by a very short gap in time.

Es ist schwer zu glauben, dass es erst gestern abend war, daß hier 600 Polizisten, unzählige Polizeiwägen und ein Polizeihubschrauber am Werk waren. Heute morgen zeugten nur noch etwas zerbrochenes Glas auf dem Trottoir, ein paar Kamerateams vor Ort und ein Haus völlig ohne Fenster davon. Ansonsten, business as usual, Menschen holen sich einen Kaffee, schauen in die Fenster unzähliger Galerien. Wahnsinn und Normalität, manchmal nur von einer sehr kurzen Zeitspanne getrennt.

Lost in transit

It looks a bit like Big Ben, but it isn´t. It is somewhere in Köpenick, a district in the South-East of Berlin. I am starting to wonder, every time I am looking for a new studio space it takes me more and more out of the city centre, and its always raining.

Es sieht vielleicht ein wenig aus wie Big Ben in London, aber das ist es nicht. Es ist irgendwo in Köpenick. Ich beginne mich ein wenig zu wundern, warum jedesmal wenn ich mir neue Atelierflächen anschaue, es mich mehr und mehr aus Berlin Mitte hinauszieht, und warum es jedesmal dabei regnet.

1100 !

This painting, which has the size of two daily paintings, marks again a very special day. 1100 days of painting, that means more or less three years if I am not mistaken. A journey that shows some mileage, but has not come to an end yet.... thank you for all the support, for your stamina to bear with me. And thanks again to all my models, for their time and patience and sometimes forgiveness if I got it wrong. In todays painting Anne is my model, wearing a dress by the wonderful designer Giambattista Valli

As it is already a custom, I will keep the bidding open a bit longer for this "100st" painting till Thursday the 26th of November, 7:30 pm local time. Thank you !!!

Dieses Bild, in der Größe von zwei Tagesbildern, markiert wieder einmal einen besonderen Tag. 1100 Tage des Malens, das bedeutet mehr oder weniger drei Jahre, wenn ich mich nicht täusche. Eine Reise die schon einiges hinter sich hat aber noch lange nicht zu ihrem Ende gekommen ist ... ich danke Ihnen allen für Ihre Unterstützung, für Ihre Ausdauer und Ihr Wohlwollen. Und natürlich gilt ein ganz großes Danke allen meinen Modellen, für ihre Zeit, ihre Geduld und manchmal auch für ihre Toleranz wenn ich falsch lag.
Im heutigen Bild ist Anne mein Modell, die ein Kleid des wunderbaren Designers Giambattista Valli trägt.

Drei Bierflaschen

Three bottles of beer, empty bottles that is, standing in a bar, with some green light, having a conversation. As most German beer bottles come as recycled bottles, I am sure they have quite a tale to tell.
Drei Bierflaschen, leere um genau zu sein, die auf dem Tresen einer Bar stehen, unter grünem Licht und im Gespräch vertieft. Da ja die meisten Bierflaschen wiederverwendete Flaschen sind, haben sie sich bestimmt so einiges zu erzählen.

It looks a bit like linseed oil, but this is actually Spanish brandy....
Man könnte es für Leinöl halten, es ist aber spanischer Brandy...

Tanz mit einer Tafel

It looked to me as if the waiter was dancing with his chalkboard, a dance in the morning, and why not, if everyone was to perform a little dance in the morning I am sure the world would be quite a different place to live in.

Für mich sah es aus, als ob der Ober mit seiner Tafel tanzte, ein Tanz am Morgen, und warum auch nicht, wenn jeder morgens etwas tanzen würde, wäre die Welt und das Leben in ihr sicherlich etwas anders....

Morgens um 10

In the morning, at 10 o clock at the Hackescher Markt. The Rosenthalter Street leading to it is rather narrow, and lets little light in, but at the tram station at the Markt the light comes in, as the street ends in a rather big cross road, and larger pavements on the other side.

10 Uhr morgens am Hackeschen Markt. Die Rosenthaler Strasse die zu ihm führt ist recht schmal und lässt wenig Licht durch, aber an der Straßenbahnhaltestelle am Hackesche Markt kommt das Licht dann doch, weil die Strasse in eine relativ große Kreuzung und weitläufigere Trottoirs mündet.

Studio Kitchen

Rote Brücke

The red bridge, well it is not really a red bridge, but the iron work of the balustrade is reddish, next to it is the house of the federal president, well I don´t actually know if he lives there ... I wonder if they give signal with the flag, like in Buckingham Palace, where the flag flies when the Queen is at home.

Die rote Brücke, naja es ist nicht wirklich eine rote Brücke, aber die Eisenkonstruktion des Geländers ist rötlich, direkt daneben ist das Haus vom Bundespräsidenten, ob er wirklich dort wohnt, weiß ich garnicht ... Ich frage mich, ob sie dort wohl auch die Flagge hissen, wie im Buckingham Palace auf dem sie weht wenn die Queen zuhause ist.

Weinkeller

Then I was invited to visit the wine cellar at Al Contadinos. A real wine cellar, not a trendy mock up one with funny plaster at the walls and wooden barrels cut into half. This was the real thing, crates of wine everywhere, in the middle of the room a small old table with two benches. And the sweet smell of cork and red wine in the air. From above you hear the foot steps of people walking outside on the pavement, if only they would know what lies underneath their feet.

Und dann wurde ich in den Weinkeller des Al Contadino gebeten. Ein richtiger Weinkeller, nicht so eine trendy Kopie eines solchen etwa mit lustigem Putz an den Wänden und halbierten Holzfässern in der Ecke. Nein, das hier war echt, Weinkisten überall, in der Mitte des Raumes ein alter Tisch mit zwei Bänken. Und der süsse Geruch von Kork und rotem Wein hing in der Luft. Über einem hörte man die Schritte der draussen auf dem Trottoir Vorbeigehenden, wenn sie wüssten was unter ihren Füssen liegt.

Weinbar

Walking my usual daily way through the Gormannstrasse, I met an old friend, Dottore Taskino, an artist and designer from the south of Italy. He invited me for an espresso in a new winebar called Al Contadino. What a wonderful place this is. Highly recommendable, with its own wine cellar.... more to come, the espresso btw. was the best I had for a very long time.

Als ich meinen täglichen Weg durch die Gormannstrasse ging, traf ich einen alten Freund, Dottore Taskino, ein Künstler und Designer aus Süditalien. Er lud mich zu einem Espresso in eine neue Weinbar mit dem Namen Al Contadino ein. Was für ein wunderbarer Platz. Sehr zu empfehlen, sie haben sogar ihren eigenen Weinkeller dort .... Fortsetzung folgt, der Espresso übrigens war der beste, den ich seit langem getrunken habe.

Unchained

This lady is passing one of the last unchained coffee shops at the Hackescher Markt, I think this cafe has not changed for the last 10 years, and that means something in this part of town.
Diese Dame geht an einem der letzten Cafes am Hackeschen Markt vorbei, das noch nicht zu einer Kette gehört. Ich glaube dieses Cafe hat sich seit zehn Jahren nicht verändert, und das heißt schon etwas in dieser Gegend.

Books

Leslie in front of one of my favourite bookstores near the Museumsinsel. I love bookstores, especially if I don´t actually look for a certain book, just to browse, to be inspired to find something..... I just cannot imagine a world without books, to me that would be like a world without music.

Leslie vor einem meiner Lieblingsbuchläden an der Museumsinsel. Ich liebe Buchläden, besonders wenn ich nicht nach einem bestimmten Buch suche, sondern mich nur einmal umschaue, mich inspirieren lasse etwas zu finden .... Ich kann mir eine Welt ohne Bücher ganz einfach nicht vorstellen, das wäre für mich wie eine Welt ohne Musik.

Nur ein Moment

Only for a very short moment those grey clouds opened to give way to this blast of sunlight, maybe only for 15 minutes, but it was worth every second waiting for it.
Nur für eine kurze Weile öffneten sich die Grauen Wolken um das Sonnenlicht durchzulassen, es waren vielleicht 15 Minuten, aber jede Sekunde darauf zu warten hatte sich gelohnt

Ton

In case you are wondering what this gentleman is doing with a microphone and recording equipment in my studio, here is the explanation. Frigge Mehring from the NDR television channel came with her team yesterday to film a documentary about me and my work for the programme Lebensart, to be aired on the 26th of December. So first we went outside to revisit some of the places I have been painting recently, and then it was back to my studio.... here the painted impression and some photographs for you.

Für den Fall, daß Sie sich jetzt fragen was dieser Mann mit einem Mikrofon und Aufnahmegeräten bei mir im Atelier macht, kommt hier die Erklärung. Frigge Mehring vom NDR Fernsehen kam mit ihrem team gestern zu mir um eine Dokumentation über mich und meine Arbeit für die Sendung Lebensart zu drehen, Sendetermin 26. Dezember. Erst waren wir draussen unterwegs um einige der Plätze die ich kürzlich gemalt haben zu besuchen und dann gings zurück ins Atelier .... hier eine gemalte Impression und ein paar Fotos mit Eindrücken für Sie.

Baugrube

This must be one of the last gaps between buildings in the Brunnenstrasse, giving way to the shadow play of the adjacent buildings. But not for very long. Work to fill this last gap has already started.

Dies muss eine der letzten Baulücken in der Brunnenstrasse sein, sie gibt dem Schattenspiel der angrenzenden Gebäude noch Raum. Aber nicht mehr für sehr lange. Die Arbeiten, um diese letzte Lücke zu schliessen, haben bereits begonnen.

Die alte Kirchentür

I am not sure if this old church is still used as a church, it is off the Invalidenstrasse, and it has a beautiful old door.

Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob diese alte Kirche noch als solche genutzt wird, sie liegt an der Invalidenstrasse, und hat eine wunderschöne alte Tür.

Fairytales

There is a hut in the Monbijou Park that shows fairytales. What a delightful way to spend the afternoon. Those two study the program for the next tale, but who knows - maybe there is a fairy already just behind them, the shadows are not only from two people if you look very carefully.

Es gibt eine Hütte im Monbijou Park, in der Märchen aufgeführt werden. Was für eine wunderbare Art den Nachmittag zu verbringen. Diese zwei studieren das Programm für das nächste Stück, aber wer weiß - vielleicht ist da ja schon eine Märchengestalt just hinter ihnen, denn die Schatten sind nicht nur von zwei Personen, wenn Sie genauer hinschauen.
