Gallery Opening

Across the road from my apartment is a gallery. They had an opening the other night, and due to the relative warm weather that we had lately, many visitors gathered outside on the pavement, ( poor artist, just imagine .... ) anyway, for me a perfect scene to do some sketches, sitting in the comfort of my own home just having to look across the street.

Auf der, meiner Wohnung, gegenüberliegenden Straßenseite befindet sich eine Galerie. Vor kurzem gab es dort eine Ausstellungseröffnung und aufgrund des relativ milden Wetters das wir seit einiger Zeit haben, standen viele Besucher draussen auf dem Trottoir (der arme Künstler, man stelle sich vor ...), wieauchimmer, für mich war dies eine perfekte Szene zum Skizzieren, ich konnte im Komfort meines eigenen Zuhauses sein und brauchte nur über die Straße zu blicken.

A dedicated man

As my workman arrived later today ( must have been a wild weekend) I had some time to do some outside sketching this morning. I saw this man, and something in the way he walked I thought this must be a dedicated man, self-assured, successful, at peace with himself and the world.

Der Tischler kam heute morgen erst später ( vielleicht hatte er ja ein wildes Wochenende ) und so hatte ich etwas Zeit um draussen zu skizzieren. Dabei sah ich diesen Mann und etwas in der Art wie er sich bewegte, fesselte mich. Ich dachte mir, das muss ein engagierter, selbstsicherer, erfolgreicher Herr sein, mit sich und der Welt in Frieden.

Three Bottles

I enjoyed the peace and quiet of my studio today, no workman running around, no drilling, no dust, no comments by self appointed art critics, wonderful. So I have chosen some empty bottles standing on a window still to paint today. This old window will soon be replaced by a new one, so it is a little tribute to my old studio windows as-well.

Heute habe ich den Frieden und die Ruhe in meinem Atelier genossen, keine herumlaufenden Arbeiter, kein Bohren, kein aufwirbelnder Staub, und auch keine Kommentare von selbsternannten Kunstkritikern - wunderbar. So wählte ich einige leere Flaschen, die auf der Fensterbank stehen für das heutige Bild. Übrigens wird dieses alte Fenster bald durch ein modernes ersetzt und so ist das heutige Bild auch irgendwie ein kleiner Tribut an die alten Atelierfenster.

The Foreman

The foreman examining the building site. Those 500 watt working lamps placed on the floor give a wonderful light to paint.

Der Bauleiter überprüft die Baustelle. Diese 500 Watt Arbeitslampen auf den Boden gestellt ergeben ein Licht, das sich wunderbar malen lässt.

The Sheetrocker

This room was once a small corridor and a bathroom. I had the wall taken away ( thats a German tradition ) and see what a beautiful space I have got, well after the sheet-rocker had a go at it... one day this will be a beautiful pantry kitchen and storage space for canvases, with an adjacent roof terrace and a view over the lake.... well forget about the last two things... but it will be a kitchen and storage room.

Dieser Raum bestand einmal aus einem kleinen Flur und einem Badezimmer. Ich habe eine Wand herausreissen lassen und wie Sie sehen nun wunderbar Platz bekommen, na ja, nachdem der Trockenbauer sich ausführlich mit dem Raum beschäftigt hatte. In hoffentlich nicht allzu ferner Zukunft wird hier eine schöne Teeküche und vor allem Stauraum für Leinwände vorhanden sein, mit einer angrenzenden Dachterrasse und Blick über den See ... na ja, die letzten beiden Features vergessen wir dann mal wieder ... aber Küche und Stauraum wird es auf jeden Fall.

Mixing the Plaster

Some of you who follow my blog from the very start may remember that my studio was undergoing some renovations more than a year ago. Well to cut a long story short, the renovation stopped in the middle... and that was that. They discovered dry rot in another part of the building, and the new owner had to recalculate, re-plan etc. etc. But with the start of the new year things piked up again. For the last two weeks I shared my studio with plumbers, electricians, carpenters... etc., and everyone of them gave me of course very good advise how to paint, everyone of them knew Bob Ross (!) ... now this is my small revenge, I sketched them while they worked and now I am going to paint them... here is the first one.

Manche von Ihnen, die meinen blog ziemlich von Anfang an verfolgt haben, erinnern sich vielleicht, daß mein Atelier vor gut einem Jahr renoviert wurde. Um es kurz zu machen, die Renovierung wurde mittendrin abgebrochen ... und das war´s dann erstmal. Man hatte Schwamm in einem anderen Gebäudeteil gefunden und der neue Hausbesitzer musste seine Kalkulation und Planung noch einmal neu gestalten, etc. Aber mit dem Beginn diesen Jahres tat sich diesbezüglich wieder etwas und ich habe in den letzten zwei Wochen mein Atelier fast täglich mit Installateuren, Elektrikern, Tischlern, etc. geteilt, und sie haben mir währenddessen natürlich alle Ratschläge, wie ich malen soll, gegeben, jeder von ihnen kannte Bob Ross (!) ... nun dies hier ist meine kleine Rache, ich habe sie skizziert während sie bei mir arbeiteten und jetzt werde ich sie malen - hier ist schon mal der Erste.

Finally

The last day for me with Twilight. The art work is finished, photographed, and now in the hands of the graphic designer. So one little more blog painting of Twilight for you. But I may come back to this theme as there will a "making of" film be made, in which I will paint life for the camera..... so it is not really finished... my big thank you again to Marc Wilkins, he treated me and my work with great respect, it was a real privilege to work with such a professional artist.

Der letzte Tag für mich und den Twilight Film. Das Werk ist vollbracht, fotografiert, und jetzt in den Händen des Grafikdesigners. Ein letztes kleines blog Bild also heute mit dem Twilight Thema. Ich werde allerdings sicher dazu noch einmal zurückkommen, da ein "Making of" Film gedreht wird, für den ich dann live vor der Kamera malen werde... also ist es doch nicht wirklich zuende... Ich bedanke mich noch einmal ganz herzlich bei Marc Wilkins, er behandelte mich und meine Arbeit mit großem Respekt, es war ein wirkliches Privileg mit so einem professionellen Künstler zusammenarbeiten zu dürfen.

Can this shower wash away the nightmare ? Or is it the prelude to even more dramatic events ?
Tomorrow will be the big day, the photo-shoot of the final artwork for the film poster, so this series comes slowly to an end.

Kann die Dusche den Albtraum wegwaschen? Oder ist dies das Vorspiel zu noch dramatischeren Ereignissen?
Morgen ist der große Tag, das Photo Shooting des endgültigen Motivs für das Filmplakat, und so kommt auch diese Serie so langsam zu ihrem Ende.

Despair - Twilight Continues

The rewarding thing for me working on the Twilight Film project is, that I have access to emotions, played by actors, that in real life would be impossible to get at. Even if I would witness something like this it wold be vulgar and tasteless on my part to exploit someone else's emotions like this , but here it is played by actors.

Es ist für mich etwas sehr Befriedigendes bei der Arbeit am Film Projekt Twilight, durch die Schauspieler Zugang zu Gefühlen zu bekommen, die im echten Leben nicht so leicht verfügbar sind. Selbst wenn ich realer Zeuge von etwas Vergleichbaren würde, wäre es vulgär und geschmacklos die Emotionen eines Anderen derart auszunutzen, aber hier werden sie von Schauspielern gespielt.

Still Running - Twiligh Continues

Another scene from Magdalenas get away. I sometimes wonder what it is, that we are so fascinated by drama and all that comes with it. Is it when we watch it the silent hope that something like this will never happen to us ?

Eine weitere Szene von Magdalenas Flucht. Manchmal frage ich mich warum wir eigentlich so von dramatischen Szenen und alles was zu ihnen gehört, fasziniert sind. Ist es vielleicht, daß wir uns, wenn wir sie beobachten insgeheim wünschen, daß soetwas uns selbst nie passieren wird ?

When the time stops - Twilight continues

The smoke has cleared, all noise is gone, even the rain seems to have stopped, it is the moment where the time stops, where the horror of being at the wrong place at the wrong time comes to light....... rest assured that there was no animal harmed during the filming of Twilight, it is an actor like anybody else, it even has an equity card I think.

Der Rauch hat sich gelichtet, der Lärm ist fort, sogar der Regen scheint aufgehört zu haben, es ist jener Moment an dem die Zeit stehenbleibt, wenn die grausige Realität am falschen Ort zur falschen Zeit zu sein einsetzt .... seien Sie allerdings verischert, daß kein Tier während des Drehs von Twilight zu Schaden kam.

...what ? - Twilight Continues

The drama takes its course.... the lights of the car, the rain - and the smoke diffuses the vision and yet makes it clear, something very disturbing must have happened to Magdalena (played by Paula Redlefsen) in the film Twilight.

Das Drama nimmt seinen Lauf... die Lichter des Wagens, der Regen, der Rauch vernebeln den Blick, und trotzdem ist es klar: es muss Magdalena (gespielt von Paula Redlefsen) etwas sehr Unheimliches passiert sein, im Film Twilight.

Diamond Street - Twilight Continues

On Monday I was invited to see the Twilight Film on a big screen, while the director was adjusting some of the colours. Seeing it on the big screen I realised again how brilliant Marc Wilkins storytelling is and I felt once more drawn to some scenes to paint them. With this dramatic scene of rain, despair and darkness the title of my painting might be a bit twisted, but still, the rain against the light of the approaching car transformed it to a street of diamonds for me.

Am Montag war ich eingeladen mir den Twilight Film auf einer großen Leinwand anzusehen während der Regisseur einige der Farben abstimmte. Beim diesem erneuten Betrachten des Films realisierte ich noch einmal was für ein hervorragender Geschichtenerzähler Marc Wilkins ist und ich fühlte mich ein weiteres Mal inspiriert noch mehr Szenen aus dem Film zu malen. Der Titel meines heutigen Bildes mag bei dieser Szene aus Regen, Verzweiflung und Dunkelheit etwas fehl am Platz klingen, aber dennoch, für mich schuf der Regen im Gegenlicht des herankommenden Wagens, eine Straße aus Diamanten.

Twilight Continues

Do you remember the Twilight Film series I painted last year during the summer ? Well, now I am working on the final painting to be used as the art work for the film poster. To get into the mood of the film again I will paint some more daily Twilight paintings during the next days while working on the large painting.

Erinnern Sie sich an die Tiwilight Film Serie, die ich während des Sommers gemalt habe ? Nun, jetzt arbeite ich an dem endgültigen großen Bild das dann als Filmposter verwendet wird. Um wieder in die Stimmung des Films zu kommen, werde ich ein paar weitere Twilight Bilder in den nächsten Tagen malen, während ich an dem großen Bild arbeite.

Today I got a painting back which I had lent to a company years ago ( I actually had almost completely forgotten about it) it is called The Italian Couple. I painted it 4 years ago...... it is very strange to see it again, I have changed as a painter I think, but here it is, I hope it makes you smile.

Heute habe ich ein Bild zurück bekommen das ich vor Jahren an ein Geschäft ausgeliehen hatte (ich hatte es schon fast vergessen). Der Titel des Bildes: Das italienische Paar, gemalt vor vier Jahren. Das Bild heute wiederzusehen ist sehr interessant, da ich mich als Maler seitdem doch verändert habe. Na ja hier ist es und vielleicht schmunzeln Sie ja ein wenig beim Betrachten....

Almost like an Evening Gown

If you look twice, you might think that this lady in the kitchen of the Quatsch Comedy Club is actually wearing an evening gown, or is it just my imagination ?

Lots of details in a big kitchen, glasses to be polished, put back into their place, empty bottles back into their crates, an amazing potpourri of shapes and colours, every night live at the Quatsch Comedy Club in Berlin, but this show is by special appointment only, or you just watch my blog.

About the A painting on tour project - Thank you once again for the enormous response. The 1 year blog anniversary paining is now almost completely dry and will soon embark on its long journey. I will inform you as soon as this project goes into its starting phase.

Viele Details gibt es in einer großen Küche, Gläser die poliert und an ihren Platz zurückgestellt werden sollen, leere Flaschen zurück in ihre Kästen, ein erstaunliches Potpourri von Formen und Farben, jeden Abend live im Quatsch Comedy Club in Berlin, aber diese Vorstellung sieht man nur, wenn man ausnahmsweise auf diese "Bühne" darf, (danke!) also verfolgen Sie einfach weiter meinen blog um dabei zu sein.

Cappuccino

A man gazing through the window of a coffee shop, lost in thoughts, like in a day dream he puts sugar in his cappuccino without looking at the cup, as he has done this every morning for so many many years, there are the papers ready to read, the hand automatically starts flicking through the pages, but his eyes are still lost in space... or maybe he is just thinking, why is this funny chap on the other side of the street making a drawing of me?

Ein Herr blickt durch das Fenster eines Coffeeshops, gedankenverloren, einem Tagträumer gleich. Er gibt Zucker in seinen Cappuccino ohne überhaupt auf die Tasse zu schauen, er hat das so jeden Morgen seit vielen vielen Jahren getan. Die Zeitungen liegen zum Lesen bereit, er fängt automatisch an sie achtlos durchzublättern, aber seine Augen sind immer noch woandershin gerichtet ... oder vielleicht denkt er sich einfach nur: warum macht der komische Typ da auf der anderen Straßenseite eine Zeichnung von mir ?

The Chef de Cuisine at the Quatsch Comedy Club. Like a conductor or a captain guiding his team, every detail, every move at ease but yet controlled. This is another show that goes on, another vital part of the theatre that serves the audience night after night.

Der Chef de Cuisine im Quatsch Comedy Club. Wie ein Dirigent oder ein Kapitän der sein Team leitet, jedes Detail, jede Bewegung mit Leichtigkeit - doch voll kontrolliert. Das ist eine weitere Show, die abläuft, ein weiterer wichtiger Teil des Theaters, das sein Publikum Abend für Abend bedient.

Studio Interior

Today a view into a corner of my studio. I got those two couturier dolls a few weeks ago, they are now wearing dresses that my models will pose in for new paintings. And if I have no model to work with, they do very nicely instead.

Heute ein Blick in mein Atelier. Diese zwei Schneiderpuppen habe ich mir vor ein paar Wochen angeschafft, sie tragen nun Kleider, in denen meine Modelle für neue Bilder posieren werden. Und, wenn ich kein Modell habe mit dem ich arbeite, geht es mit diesen beiden "Damen" fast genauso gut.

A Walk in the Park

A man walking his two dogs in the park. They seem to be very pleased to get rid of the leash.

Bar Quartier 206 No. 2

Here is my second worked out sketch of the bar in the Quartier 206. It is a fantastic place, although placed in the basement between two escalators high above it, it has a great big skylight, actually a perfect studio. Maybe this is even turning into a triology. Thank you for all the enquiries regarding the larger painting, but it is already reserved for a gallery.

Hier ist meine zweite ausgearbeitete Skizze der Bar im Quartier 206. Das ist ein wunderbarer Platz dort obwohl die Bar im Untergeschoß beheimatet ist zwischen zwei hohen Rolltreppen, aber über alles spannt sich ein riesiges Oberlicht, wunderschön, - eigentlich das perfekte Atelier. Vielleicht wird aus diesen Motiven sogar eine Trilogie. Vielen Dank für die zahlreichen Anfragen das größere Bild betreffend, aber es ist schon für eine Galerie reserviert.

Bar Quartier 206

A few weeks ago I finished a larger canvas of a bar scene. I thought it would be nice to add a second scene of that bar to it, so I went there this morning and made a few sketches. Here is the first worked out sketch, to be used as well in a larger version.

Vor ein paar Wochen habe ich ein größeres Bild mit einer Barszene fertiggestellt. Ich hatte mir überlegt, daß es eigentlich schön wäre eine zweite Szene aus dieser Bar zu malen. So ging ich also heute morgen noch einmal dort hin und machte ein weitere Skizzen. Hier ist die erste Ausarbeitung, die ebenso in einem großen Bild verwendet werden kann.

Red Blue and a Shoe Shop

A lady dressed in red, another dressed in blue, a huge Chinese lampion in a golden lit shoe shop, you probably wonder that something like this caught my attention.

Eine Dame in Rot, eine andere in Blau, ein riesiger chinesischer Lampion in einem golden beleuchtenden Schuhgeschäft, na da wundern Sie sich jetzt aber daß mir ein Motiv wie dieses ins Auge stach, oder?

Shadow Play

One of the great things and an absolute wonder about strolling around town on the lookout for new things to paint is, for me, that there is always something, one way or the other, that I find, like e.g. this shadow play this morning. Makes you really wonder why people watch TV, as it is all out there.

Laura Sweet featured on her blog " If It's Hip, It's Here" a wonderful collection of painted Champagne.... my bottle of Bollinger from new year´s eve has got the honour to be amongst it, thank you Laura !

Eines der schönsten Dinge und ein absolutes Wunder für mich, ist, daß ich bei meinen Stadtspaziergängen auf der Suche nach neuen Motiven zum Malen immer, aber auch wirklich immer etwas finde, wie zum Beispiel dieses Schattenspiel heute morgen. Da fragt man sich wirklich wozu die Menschen fernsehen, es ist doch alles da draussen.

Three Graces

New year´s resolutions ?..... Yes I made some. Amongst them the intention to give myself more time again to study and to draw and also, to work from casts... And so, I have chosen for today´s new year´s painting already a plaster cast of the Three Graces.

Vorsätze für´s neue Jahr ? Ja, es gibt ein paar bei mir, unter anderem den Vorsatz, mir selbst wieder mehr Zeit zum Studieren und zum Zeichnen zu geben und wieder nach Skulpturen zu arbeiten ... und so habe ich für das heutige Neujahrsbild gleich eine Gipsskulptur der Drei Grazien gewählt.
