Sandwiches

Sometimes it just works, although not always.... there might be someone calling at the door, a telephone ringing, or most of all it might be me who is not concentrated enough, but sometimes it just works. A painting a day in one single go, no interference, no break, like a long orchestra piece..... there are moments where it seems there is no end to it, but then it starts to flow, space and time are lost, just the rhythm of the brush mixing and applying paint...... I am grateful for such moments.

Manchmal klappt es einfach, jedoch nicht immer .... da ist jemand an der Tür oder das Telefon klingelt oder ich bin selbst einfach nicht konzentriert genug, doch, wie gesagt, manchmal läuft es auch sehr gut. Ein Tagesbild in einem einzigen Durchlauf gemalt, keine Störungen, keine Pause, wie ein langes Orchesterstück .. es gibt Momente da scheint es einem, man würde niemals fertig, doch dann beginnt der Fluß, Raum und Zeit sind unwichtig, nur der Rhythmus des Pinsels der die Farben mischt und aufträgt .... Ich bin dankbar für solche Erfahrungen.

Four different Sizes

Do you know this situation, you just want a coffee to go, and suddenly you find yourself in the middle of a quiz show, where the right answers are expected from you: which cup size, small, medium, large, extra large, with caramel, or soy skimmed milk, organic milk from happy cows......... could I just have coffee .... please...

Kennen Sie das, Sie wollen sich eigentlich nur schnell einen Kaffee mitnehmen und finden sich urplötzlich in einer Quizshow wieder wo die richtigen Antworten von Ihnen erwartet werden: welche Bechergröße, small, medium, large, extra large, mit Karamel, oder eher mit Soja fettfreier Milch, es gäbe natürlich auch Biomilch von glücklichen Kühen ......... kann ich bitte einfach nur Kaffee bekommen .... bitte....

Spoilt for Choice

The offer of food is just vast at the station, and at the same time this food corners are the only places where you will find more warmer colours, as the rest of the station is more or less a celebration of everything grey.

Das Angebot an Speisen ist einfach riesig im Hauptbahnhof, und gleichzeitig sind diese Imbißstände die einzigen Plätze dort wo man eine etwas wärmere Farbgebung finden kann, da der Rest des Bahnhof mehr oder weniger eine Huldigung an Grau in allen möglichen Variationen ist.

On the Up

Large elevators have always something intimidating I think, but they make interesting motifs to paint. Part three of my "Grand Berlin Station Tour"

I was lately asked what my favourite drawing tools are, now here they are. I am not a very accomplished draughtsman I have to say, but I developed over the years a kind of shorthand, that gives me exactly the information I need for a painting.





1. my favourite notebook: a Moleskine REPORTER Style Pocket Notebook - Plain Pages

2. View Catcher™, now this is as simple as it is genial. Close one eye and find your picture plane,it is fun and entertaining and makes you start to appreciate objects and scenes in a complete new light, this is just perfect to work with

3. Copic Wide, love those as they are bold, I use three shades of grey, so I am forced to make quick decisions

4. Copic Sketch

5. and 7. Japanese Brush Pen, I got this one from a friend from Tokyo, but you can get them as-well in art-stores outside of Japan, I believe.

6.Lithographic Crayon by WM. Korn, Inc., they are just wonderful, and come in a also wonderful little box.

The Station

I discovered the main train station in Berlin as a great place for motifs to paint. The architecture is, well modern, a lot of steel and glass, nothing like those stations in Paris or London, but the light is intriguing, and the place has so many levels that I still get lost.... so, there will be more to come.

Ich habe den Berliner Hauptbahnhof als eine großartige Quelle für Motive zum malen entdeckt. Die Architektur ist zwar, na ja modern halt, viel Stahl und Glas und in keiner Weise vergleichbar mit den Bahnhöfen alter Grandeur in Paris oder London, aber das Licht im Hauptbahnhof ist geheimnisvoll und in dem Gebäude gibt es so viele verschiedene Level daß ich mich immer noch verlaufe... Bestimmt kommt noch mehr von dieser neuen Entdeckung....

Elegance has no Season

You know what happens these days when I walk around Berlin ? People see me and they automatically go into a pose, preferably in front of something red, pretending to read something as not to make it too obvious that they are actually posing for me....... ha ha ha only joking, but when I saw this elegant lady today I prayed she would hold her pose for some time, and she did, thank you to the unknown lady.

Wissen Sie was im Moment wenn ich in den Straßen von Berlin unterwegs bin, oft passiert? Menschen erkennen mich und posieren automatisch, gerne passend vor einem roten Hintergrund, geben dabei natürlich vor, etwas zu lesen um nicht zu offensichtlich werden zu lassen, daß sie mir Modell stehen .... NEIN, schön wär es (na ja vielleicht), war nur Spaß. Aber als ich heute diese elegante Dame sah, betete ich, daß sie eine Weile diese Pose hält, und sie tat es, vielen Dank liebe unbekannte Dame!

I started after finishing the little daily painting with a larger version, here you see the under-painting, oil on canvas 19.7 inch x 23.64 inch.

High Above 3

There she stands, in all her beauty. High above. What a wonderful sculpture, and what a great place for it, and if you think this was just made to dress up a building.

Da steht sie, in all ihrer Schönheit. Hoch oben über allem. Was für eine wunderbare Skulptur, und was für ein perfekter Platz für sie, – wenn man dabei denkt, daß soetwas wie sie nur geschaffen wurde, um ein Gebäude zu schmücken....

I had some visitors today. The team of the Emmy award winning tv show Incontext tv (a production of klru, the PBS station in Austin, Texas) with its producer Dutch Rall interviewed and filmed me while I painted for 4 hours. I am a bit shellshocked regarding experiences with the media, but this one was very pleasant. Here is a little slide show that I have put together of to-days filming.

Heute hatte ich Besuch im Atelier. Das Team von der Emmy preisgekrönten Fernsehserie Incontext tv (eine Production von klru, der PBS Station in Austin, Texas) mit ihrem Produzenten Dutch Rall machte ein Interview mit mir und filmte mich 4 Stunden lang beim malen. Ich habe bisher eigentlich nicht die besten Erfahrungen mit den Medien, doch diese heute war überraschend angenehm. Hier ist eine kleine Diashow, die ich über den heutigen Dreh im Atelier zusammengestellt habe.

High Above

When a visitor comes to Berlin, and does not like to go into museums or galleries, he still can treat himself to a lot of excellent sculptures. He or she must just do one thing, raise the head a bit, and there they are, mostly standing on balustrades before the roof begins, or they are on an access balcony like this fine lady at the national opera.

Wenn man als Besucher nach Berlin kommt und einem nicht der Sinn nach Museums- und Galeriebesuchen steht, kann man doch ganz einfach in den Genuß wunderschöner Skulpturen kommen. Der Besucher muss nur den Kopf etwas heben und das Auge schweifen lassen, und da sind sie, meist auf Balustraden nah am beginnenden Dach stehend, oder sie haben ihren Platz in Laubengängen, so wie diese feine Dame bei der Staatsoper.

The Tailor

A few weeks ago I had this wish to own a pair of dark blue trousers with red pinstripes. Well, they are not in fashion at the moment, I know, so, where to go to get one? Finally, I went to a tailor, Oliver Sinz, and he was the man who made me just the very thing I was looking for. Today was the first fitting and it is just perfect! So todays painting is a painting of "my tailor ".

Vor ein paar Wochen wollte ich mir ein Paar dunkelblaue Hosen mit roten Nadelstreifen kaufen. Ja, ich weiß, die sind gerade nicht in Mode, aber trotzdem, doch wo so etwas finden. Letzendlich ging ich zu einem Maßschneider, Oliver Sinz, und fand in ihm genau den Richtigen, der mir nun genau DIE Hose schneidert, nach der ich suchte. Heute war die erste Anprobe und sie sind einfach nur perfekt! Also, das heutige Bild ist ein Bild "meines Schneiders".

The Slow 2

Another painting from the Slow, I only made two sketches on that particular day, most of it by heart after I had just left the shop, so some details are pure fantasy.

The Slow

It all started today with a bottle of 1999 Blandy´s Madeira Wine I saw in a window of a tiny wine shop. A lovely bottle I thought would be nice to paint ( and drink ) so I went into the shop and was instantly transfixed by the atmosphere. The first room, the wine shop was very small with shelves right up to the ceiling, but a door opened to the back of the shop and onto a large room, like a private club or restaurant, with long tables, chandeliers, and an open kitchen I believe.... the place is called Slow, enchanting !

Heute begann alles mit einer Flasche 1999er Blandy Madeira, die ich im Fenster eines winzigen Weinladens entdeckte. Eine schöne Flasche, auch zum Malen, dachte ich mir (und zum Trinken) und betrat den Laden. Sofort nahm mich die Atmosphäre darin gefangen. Der vordere Raum, der Weinladen, war sehr klein und voll mit Regalen bis unter die Decke, aber eine Tür führte weiter in den hinteren Bereich des Ladens und hin in einen großen Raum, der wie ein privater Club oder ein Restaurant wirkte, mit seinen langen Tischen, den Kronleuchtern und ich glaube sogar, einer offenen Küche darin .... dieser Laden nennt sich Slow, bezaubernd !

A Sunny Saturday

A glorious sunny Saturday we had today. Still cold, but people enjoying the sunshine, with the promise of more to come. I saw this man at the corner to Hackescher Markt, while doing some shopping at the market opposite, so I got my shopping done, and a motif for todays painting, perfect.

Heute hatten wir einen wunderbar sonnigen Samstag. Zwar immer noch ziemlich kalt, aber die Leute genossen schon den Sonnenschein, wohl in der Vorfreude, daß davon hoffentlich bald mehr zu erwarten ist. Diesen Herrn sah ich an der Ecke Hackescher Markt, als ich gerade auf der anderen Straßenseite, auf dem Markt, meine Einkäufe erledigte. So habe ich meinen Einkauf gemacht und gleich ein Motiv für das heutige Bild bekommen, perfekt.

Like in an American Movie

His paintings are all right, but those titles..... let me explain. Usually if you get a Chinese take away in this country, you get it in a silver aluminium box, something that looks like the insulation of a Nasa space shuttle.... never did you get your fried noodles in one of these carton boxes like you see them in an American movie, but now there is a new chain that serves them just like this..... guess where was my lunch in today ?

It is always wonderful to hear from you when your paintings have arrived, they do travel long distances, and to hear, that they arrived safely, it is always a relief, and I thank you for all your mails. Especially nice was a blog entry on Mary Jo´s blog Trust Your Style today, thank you so much !

Seine Bilder sind ja in Ordnung, aber diese Bildtitel .... Lassen Sie es mich erklären. Normalerweise, wenn man sich beim Chinesen etwas zu Essen mitnimmt, bekommt man ja die Speisen in einem Alubehälter, der doch sehr an die Isolierung eines Nasa space shuttles erinnert ... bisher gab es nie die tollen Pappkartons, die man aus amerikanischen Filmen kennt. Aber seit einer Weile nutzt eine neue Kette just diese Kartons .... also raten Sie einmal, worin heute mein Mittagessen war .... ?

Es ist immer wunderbar von Ihnen zu hören, daß die Bilder angekommen sind, ob sie nun kurze oder lange Strecken zurücklegen mussten, zu wissen daß sie sicher bei ihrem neuen Besitzer sind, ist immer beruhigend, vielen Dank für Ihre Rückmeldungen. And then there were two

And then there were two, the yellow lids remained..... the first trash can though never reappeared in this show, so, time to move on.

Und dann waren es zwei - beide wieder mit den gelben Deckeln ... jedoch die erste Mülltonne tauchte nie wieder auf in dieser Vorstellung, also war es Zeit, doch weiterzugehen.

Like Magic

When I made the sketch of the scene with the yellow trash can, resulting in yesterdays blog painting, I thought when the fellow disappeared, I linger on a bit, maybe he comes again, and there he was again, a bit like in a magician show ( hence todays tittle ) suddenly the trash can had changed from yellow to green, only the lid remained yellow ..... what happens next... ?

Als ich die Skizze mit der Szene mit der gelben Mülltonne machte, woraus das gestrige blog painting entstand, dachte ich als dieser Mann verschwand, na, ich bleibe noch etwas, vielleicht kommt er ja zurück, und da war er auch schon wieder, nur, die Mülltonne hatte, fast wie in einer Zaubervorstellung (daher der heutige Titel) ihre Farbe von gelb in grün verwandelt, nur der Deckel war gelb geblieben .... mmmh, und was passiert wohl als nächstes ... ?

A Japanes Teapot

You must know by now how I am fascinated by Asian accessories. A year ago I bought this Japanese tea pot, always wanted to paint it.... but it had to wait a year.

Mittlerweile ist Ihnen sicher schon aufgefallen, daß mich asiatische Accessoires faszinieren. Vor einem Jahr habe ich diese japanische Teekanne gekauft und wollte sie seitdem immer schon malen .... aber sie musste ein Jahr darauf warten.

Emerging

I am proud to announce that my work is now represented in Holland
by Warnars & Warnars. The two brothers have been collecting my work for some time now. On Thursday they came after a seven hours drive for a visit to my studio in Berlin. This morning we went to fetch their car from a parking house nearby, it was a bit of a to-do as we could not find a place to pay for the ticket, but I was able to sneak in very quickly a little drawing of them while we were looking for the blasted ticket machine. Out of this "second" sketch todays daily painting.

Ich freue mich bekannt geben zu dürfen, daß meine Arbeiten nun in Holland von Warnars & Warnars vertreten werden. Die zwei Brüder sammeln bereits seit einiger Zeit meine Bilder. Diesen Donnerstag kamen sie, nach einer siebenstündigen Anreise, zu Besuch zu mir ins Atelier. Heute morgen wollten wir dann ihr Auto aus dem nahen Parkhaus befreien was sich als nicht so einfach herausstellte, da wir nirgends die Maschine zum Bezahlen finden konnten. Aber, ich nutzte die Zeit während wir diese verflixte Maschine suchten, um ganz schnell eine kleine Zeichnung von den beiden anzufertigen. Und aus dieser "Skizze in Sekunden" nun das heutige Bild.

Breakfast in the Rosenthaler Str.

A quick breakfast at the Rosenthaler Strasse this morning, back to my beautiful, new renovated studio with new ideas to paint. Isn´t life just wonderful.

The Opera 3

The last one in this series, I hope you will forgive my indulgence, but I just had to paint another one, its strange, I don´t even like motorbikes, it must have been the lighting.

The Opera

You may think this is a funny title for a painting with a motorbike. You are right. In the backyard where I have my studio are some old garages. One is used by this fellow with a motorbike. The other night I was just saying good-bye to a visitor, this chap came with his motorbike, and suddenly the dark backyard was transformed to the grand opening of a modern opera so it seemed to me. I had the poor chap a few times riding up and down with his bike to get some sketches done, he obliged dutifully probably wondering what the hell was going on with this mad painter again.

Dies mag Ihnen als ein lustiger Titel für ein Bild mit einem Motorrad scheinen. Ist es auch. In dem Hinterhof, in dem ich mein Atelier habe, gibt es ein paar alte Garagen. Eine davon wird von diesem Herrn mit dem Motorrad genutzt. Vor kurzem, eines abends, ich verabschiedete gerade einen Besucher, kam dieser Motorradfahrer auf seiner Maschine angefahren, und auf einmal wurde dieser dunkle Hinterhof in den grandiosen Auftakt einer modernen Oper verwandelt, so schien es mir zumindest. Ich ließ den Armen einige Male mit seinem Motorrad auf- und abfahren um ein paar Skizzen machen zu können, er spielte geduldig mit und wunderte sich wahrscheinlich was zum Teufel jetzt wieder bei diesem verrückten Maler los war.

Outside again

After now nearly three weeks of being confined to my studio, I really enjoyed being outside again today, a wonderful light was there, bright and rich, it made me almost forget what time of the year we are in.

Nach nun fast drei Wochen die ich an mein Atelier gebunden war, genoss ich es heute ungemein, wieder draußen sein zu können. Ein wunderschönes Licht herrschte, hell und satt, es ließ mich fast vergessen, in welcher Jahreszeit wir uns gerade befinden.

As I had to share my studio for the last weeks during the day with all kinds of workmen busily doing their jobs, I always enjoyed so much the time when they had left in the early afternoon, then the studio was mine again, then I had this view into the backyard, past my blinds with the copper handle, the glass lantern, the windows, the peace that comes with the onset of the evening light....

Der Titel des heutigen Bildes ist an Virginia Woolfs Buch "A room of ones own" angelehnt. Da ich in den letzten Wochen mein Atelier tagsüber mit allen möglichen Arbeitern die dort umbauten, teilen musste, genoß ich immer ganz besonders die Zeit wenn sie am frühen Nachmittag gegangen waren, dann gehörte das Atelier wieder mir, dann hatte ich diesen Blick in den Hof wieder für mich, vorbei an den Fensterläden mit dem kupfernen Griff, der gläsernen Latene, den Fenstern und später dann der Friede, der mit dem einsetzenden Abendlicht kommt ....
