Blossoms of Spring

Flowers are wonderful, trees too, but when trees change into flowers for this very short period during spring, it is for me just breathtakingly beautiful. Every year I try to paint it.... and every year again I see how difficult it is to catch that beauty.

Blumen sind etwas wundervolles, Bäume ebenso, aber wenn sich Bäume während dieser ganz kurzen Zeit im Frühling in blühende Blumen verwandeln ist das für mich einfach atemberaubend schön. Jedes Jahr versuche ich das zu malen ... und jedes Jahr erfahre ich aufs Neue, wie schwierig es ist, solche Schönheit festzuhalten.

Nearly like Summer

Only the still tender buds remind one that it is actually spring, the sun and the light was so strong today, one could think it is already summer

Nur die immer noch zarten Knospen erinnern einen noch daran, daß es erst Frühling ist, die Sonne und das Licht waren heute so stark, man hätte meinen können, es wäre schon Sommer.

Opinion Poll / Umfrage

Thank you for all your lively response to my recent poll regarding a change in the sales method for my daily paintings.

Due to the result of this poll I will keep on offering my daily painting for 150 Euro each from 1st of May on, but with the chance to bid for it until the following day 8 pm my time. 150 Euro is the minimum price and the highest bid gets the painting. You can find more details to this new method here.

Most of the participants of the poll voted for increasing the price to 200/250 Euro per painting. But at the same time tremendously many people wrote to me saying they wanted more time to look at the painting before they decide to buy, others said they do not have access to their computers when I post and again others just live in different time zones and have had no chance to get one of the daily paintings ever.

So it turned out, that time, almost more than funds is an important factor for the people who like my daily paintings. And it is an important point for me too, especially as the blog shall remain a lively platform for my daily paintings and I want it to continue and preserve interesting many people worldwide.

Danke für die rege Teilnahme an der kürzlich durchgeführten Umfrage zu einer Änderung der Verkaufsmethode meiner Tagesbilder.

Aufgrund des Ergebnisses dieser Umfrage werde ich ab dem 1. Mai mein Tagesbild weiter für 150 Euro anbieten jedoch mit der Möglichkeit dafür bis 20:00 Uhr des jeweiligen Folgetages ein Gebot über diesem Mindestpreis abzugeben. Das höchste Gebot erhält dann den Zuschlag. Eine detailierte Erklärung finden Sie hier.

Die Mehrzahl der Teilnehmer hat sich bei der Umfrage für eine Preiserhöhung auf 200/250 Euro pro Bild ausgesprochen. Gleichzeitig schrieben mir aber auch ungemein viele Interessenten, sie könnten nicht immer bei der Veröffentlichung dabeisein, oder daß sie sich das Bild in Ruhe ansehen möchten bevor sie sich entscheiden, und manche leben ganz einfach in anderen Zeitzonen und kommen bisher nie zum Zug.

So stellte sich also heraus, daß Zeit, fast mehr als Mittel, ein wichtiges Thema für die Menschen ist, die meine Tagesbilder mögen. Ein wichtiger Punkt also auch für mich, denn der blog soll eine lebendige Plattform für meine Tagesbilder bleiben und das Interesse vieler Menschen weltweit wecken und erhalten.

Lost in Berlin ?

This scene may be mistaken for two ladies in an art gallery studying the program, well, they are not. The picture in the back is a graffiti on a wall, the over-ground light railway runs on top of at the Museumsinsel.

Diese Szene könnte als zwei Damen in einer Kunstgalerie das Programm studierend misinterpretiert werden. Tatsächlich sind die beiden aber ganz woanders, das Bild im Hintergrund ist nämlch auf einer Mauer auf der Museumsinsel, auf der oben die S-Bahn fährt.

Do you know this feeling when you read a newspaper and just one wrong turn of the page and it starts to get a life of its own? The sun is partly already so strong that people are looking for places in the shadow. Finally we are getting there.

Kennen Sie das, wenn Sie beim Zeitungslesen irgendwie nur eine Seite falsch anfassen und die ganze Zeitung fängt an ein Eigenleben zu haben? Die Sonne ist manchmal schon so stark, daß die Menschen sich einen Platz im Schatten suchen. Endlich kommen wir dem Sommer immer näher.

Bridges

A Berlin cabby once told me, that there would be more bridges in his town than in Venice. Well, I did not yet count them, but there are a lot of bridges in Berlin, that is for sure.

Ein Berliner Taxifahrer hat mir einmal erzählt, daß es in seiner Stadt mehr Brücken als in Venedig gäbe. Naja, ich habe sie bisher nicht gezählt, aber er hat schon irgendwie recht, es gibt durchaus unglaublich viele Brücken in Berlin.

First Sun

The colours are still very cold, as the earth is, but the sun is already warm. Now every day makes a change..... I should paint at least two paintings a day to keep track.

Die Farben sind immer noch sehr kalt, so wie auch der Boden, aber die Sonne wärmt schon. Jeder Tag bringt jetzt eine Veränderung ... eigentlich sollte ich mindestens zwei Bilder pro Tag malen, um das festzuhalten.

At the corner of Steinstrasse

The Steinstrasse is a small street not very far from my studio. I pass it nearly every day. It is within the old Scheunenviertel, (barn quarter) the old Jewish part of town. Soon, it will start to play a very important part in my life... and on this blog.

Die Steinstrasse ist eine kleine Straße unweit von meinem Atelier, durch die ich fast täglich komme. Sie liegt im Scheunenviertel, dem alten jüdischen Teil der Stadt. Bald wird sie anfangen, eine wichtige Rolle in meinem Leben zu spielen .... und auf diesem blog.

The Cathedral at Dawn

I have painted the Berlin Dom (the Berlin cathedral) many times already. I must have passed it probably more than a hundred times, as it is on the way I take most days. It has many different facets, more than any diamond could ever have. This morning its appearance was like this, the architecture nearly dissolved in a dawning of emerald-green.

Den Berliner Dom habe ich schon oft gemalt. Ich bin wahrscheinlich auch schon hundertmal an ihm vorbeigegangen, da er auf meinem fast täglichen Weg liegt. Er hat viele verschiedene Facetten, mehr als jeder Diamant jemals haben könnte. Heute morgen erschien er so, seine Architektur fast aufgelöst in einer smaragdgrünen Morgendämmerung.

Behind the Window

Another scene behind glass. It may come as a surprise to you, but I am very fond of abstract paintings. Although I myself can not paint abstract, but those scenes with reflecting glass are somehow a small bridge for me into that fascinating world of abstract art.

Eine weitere Szene hinter Glas. Vielleicht überrascht es sie, aber ich mag sehr gerne abstrakte Gemälde. Obwohl ich selber nicht abstrakt malen kann, aber diese Szenen mit reflektierendem Glas sind für mich doch irgendwie eine kleine Brücke in die faszinerende Welt der abstrakten Malerei.

Behind the reflections

Yesterdays half open door is closed now. How different it all suddenly looks. The view diffused by reflections in the glass, reflections of the passing outside life of a city.

Die halbgeschlossene Tür von gestern ist nun geschlossen. Wie anders alles auf einmal aussieht. Der Blick durch die Reflektionen im Glas getrübt, Reflektionen aus dem draußen vorbeiziehenden Leben einer Stadt.

Fleeting moments of a day

One of the most influential painters of the 20th century is known to have said that he is not looking for things, they just find him. With this scene today I got a feeling of what he meant. Just a glance, a twist of an eye, just something that found me in that particular moment, something I had to paint for today.

Von einem der einflussreichsten Maler des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts ist das Zitat überliefert, daß er nicht suche, sondern daß er findet. Die heutige Szene ließ mich ein wenig verstehen, was er damit meinte. Nur ein kurzer Blick, ein Flattern des Augenlids, und da ist es, etwas das mich gerade in diesem speziellen Moment fand, etwas das ich heute malen musste.

Beside the Stage

While standing on that stage and feeling very uncomfortable, I noticed this stage hand ( if you call them like that in a cinema ) sitting between the rostrum and grand piano. What I saw was the set-up for a painting, the red carpet of the stage, the first rows of empty seats, the somehow awkward position of the young man, a reminiscence of a work by Egon Schiele. While standing there I painted it in my mind, today I painted it for real finally to conclude this series.

Während ich auf dieser Bühne stand und mich sehr unwohl fühlte, bemerkte ich diesen Bühenarbeiter (wenn man sie beim Kino auch so nennt) der zwischen dem Rostrum und dem Flügel saß. Ich hatte hier die Komposition eines Bildes direkt vor mir, der rote Teppich der Bühne, die ersten Sitzreihen nicht gefüllt, die irgendwie ungelenke Haltung des jungen Mannes, eine Reminiszenz an ein Bild von Egon Schiele. Während ich da also so stand malte ich das Bild in meinem Kopf, heute malte ich es dann "richtig" auch um damit diese Serie nun abzuschließen.

After the Film

The film was over. Everyone that was part of the film was introduced by the director Marc Wilkins, even I was called onto the stage, as the Twilight painter. If I had known before, I would have disappeared while the cinema was still dark. This was the view from the stage. In case that you are wondering why the seats are suddenly blue and not read anymore like in the first paintings, well I first changed them into red as I thought it would befit the festive atmosphere better, but actually they are blue.

Der Film war vorüber. Jeder der daran mitgearbeitet hatt, wurde vom Regisseur Marc Wilkins vorgestellt, sogar ich wurde auf die Bühne gerufen, als der Twilight Maler. Wenn ich das vorher gewusst hätte, wäre ich als es noch dunkel im Saal war, verschwunden. Dies ist der Blick von der Bühne. Falls Sie sich wundern, warum die Sitze jetzt plötzlich blau und nicht mehr rot wie in den ersten Bildern dieser Serie, sind, ja, ich habe das am Anfang geändert da ich dachte es würde der festliche Atmosphäre mehr gerecht werden, aber sie sind tatsächlich blau.

In Technicolor

I noticed that while the film was shown, some of the colours in the scenes were mirrored in the faces and on the clothes of the audience.

Mir fiel auf, daß, während der Film gezeigt wurde, sich einige der Farben aus den Szenen in den Gesichtern und auf der Kleidung des Publikums spiegelten.

Larger than Life

And there the film was. Its pictures kept everyone glued to the screen. Shortly before the screening, I had met in the foyer Paula Redlefsen the leading lady of the film. I asked here if she was nervous ( I know it was a stupid question to ask ) she only looked at me and said with an ironic undertone "No, why should I, it is only a very large screen. " and afterwards I realised what she meant.

Und da war er nun, der Film. Seine Bilder fesselten alle in ihren Sitzen. Kurz vor der Aufführung hatte ich im Foyer die weibliche Hauptdarstellerin des Films, Paula Redlefsen, getroffen und ich fragte sie ob sie denn nervös sei (ich weiß das war eine dumme Frage von mir), sie sah mich nur kurz an und antwortete mit enem ironischen Unterton "Nein, warum sollte ich, es ist doch nur eine sehr große Leinwand." und später verstand ich genau, was sie damit gemeint hat.

So what is on my easel at the moment? A canvas that I had started years ago, and somehow never found my way back to, but today it seemed the right moment to start working on it again.





Und was ist im Moment sonst auf meiner Staffelei? Eine Leinwand die ich vor Jahren angefangen habe und zu der ich aber irgendwie nie zurückfand, doch heute schien der richtige Moment an diesem Bild weiterzuarbeten.

Latecomers

The good thing about the technical hiccup was, that some latecomers managed to sneak into the theatre, just in time for the beginning of the film.

Das gute an dem technischen Fehlstart war, daß ein paar Zuspätkommende sich noch ins Theater schleichen konnten, gerade rechtzeitig zum Beginn des Films.

No Sound

The film started..... but no sound. I suppose most people in the audience thought that it was meant to be like this..... well, it was not. The director shouted "There is no sound, stop....." so our main man from yesterday put the house light on again. Someone laughed, people started clapping ( it is amazing how cruel people can be ).... well after some excuses from the theatre management, some technical terms exchanged...... finally the bug was fixed, and we returned to the picture from yesterday.

Der Film fing an .... aber, es gab keinen Ton. Ich vermute die meisten im Publikum dachten ersteinmal das sollte so sein .... weit gefehlt! Der Regisseur rief "Wir haben keinen Ton, Stop....", also machte unser wichtigster Mann von gestern das Saallicht wieder an. Jemand im Publikum lachte, manche fingen sogar an zu klatschen (es ist schon erstaunlich, wie grausam Menschen sein können), ... naja, nachdem die Kinoleitung sich entschuldigt hatte und technische Fachausdrücke ausgetauscht worden waren .... war der Fehler endgültig behoben und wir kamen zum Motiv von gestern zurück.

The main man

Imagine, you have made a film, financed it yourself, months and months of work, nearly a year later is the premier. The cinema is nearly full, the house lights dimmed, and suddenly it comes down to this one single person, that gives the go ahead to start the film... what happens next ? the story continues tomorrow.

Man stelle sich vor, Sie haben einen Film gemacht, alles selbst fnanziert, auch viele Monate an Arbeit investiert und ein knappes Jahr später ist die Premiere. Das Kino ist gut gefüllt, die Beleuchtung gedimmed, und plötzlich kommt alles auf diese eine Person an, die den Startschuß für die Vorführung gibt .... und was passiert ? .... morgen erzähle ich Ihnen den Rest der Geschichte.

Today I need your assistance. Since the blog´s start in November 2006 my daily blog paintings have received huge response, interest and thankfully sales. From the beginning, my aim was always to keep my dailies affordable and available for everyone who wanted to have one and I managed so far to satisfy most of the interested buyers. On the other hand that means that now, nearly every day at least 10 potential collectors do not get the painting they want.

Shall the sales method be changed into:

Option A: Leave it as it is on the first come first serve basis for 150 Euros
Option B: Raise the price from 150 Euros to 200 Euros per painting
Option C: Silent Auction for 24 hours, starting price 150 Euro, your bid ?
Option D: I paint 5 paintings daily....... no only joking

Heute bräuchte ich Ihre Hilfe. Seit dem Start meines blogs im November 2006 haben die täglichen blog Bilder riesigen Zuspruch, Interesse und erfreulicherweise Verkäufe erfahren. Mein Ziel war von Anfang an, daß jeder der eines dieser Tagesbilder haben wollte auch die Möglichkeit bekam eines zu erwerben, und jeder interessierter Käufer hat auch, wenn auch mit Geduld, ein Bild bekommen. Auf der anderen Seite ist es aber heute so, dass mindestens zehn potentielle Sammler täglich leer ausgehen.

Soll die Verkaufsmethode geändert werden in:

Option A: Alles bleibt wie es ist, wer der Erste ist, bekommt das Bild für 150 Euro
Option B: Der Preis pro Bild erhöht sich von 150 auf 200 Euro.
Option C: Eine silent auction für 24 Stunden, Startpreis 150 Euro, Ihr Gebot ?
Option D: Ich male 5 Tagesbilder pro Tag ..... nein, war nur ein Scherz

The box office

Although Marc Wilkins` film company Storm Film paid everything for this night´s film-premiére of Twilight I still saw this lady in front of the box office. I find those box offices in old theatres and cinemas are a bit like little stages in their own right. The gold of the brass window frames, the red of the walls.... my world really.

Obwohl die Produktionsfirma von Marc Wilkins, Storm Film, an diesem Abend der Filmpremiere von Twilight alles bezahlte, sah ich diese Dame vor der Kasse. Ich finde, diese Kartenschalter in alten Theatern und Kinos sind ein wenig wie eigene kleine Bühnen. Das Gold der Messingfensterrahmen, das Rot der Wände .... genau meine Welt!

Nr. 500, the auction is closed

It is after 10pm my time. The auction for the 500th daily painting is closed. It goes to the highest bidder. Before, I would like to say thank you to all 34 bidders, it was a privilege and pleasure to have your attention.

The daily painting Nr. 500 was sold for 1.798,50 Euro ( 2,828.95 USD )

Es ist nach 22 Uhr. Die Auktion für das 500. Bild wurde geschlossen. Der höchste Bieter bekommt das Bild. Doch vorher möchte ich mich noch ganz herzlich bei allen 34 Bietern bedanken ! Es war mir eine Ehre und Freude, Ihr Interesse zu geniessen.

Das Bild Nr. 500 wurde für 1.798,50 Euro verkauft.

Inside the Cinema- Twilight

The cinema is still half empty, the first night crowd is chatting amongst each other, a lot of film people, actors, directors, designers.... looking for a suitable place to sit. Somehow the atmosphere is different to a normal night at the movies, it is a bit like in a theatre, and I would not be surprised if the curtain opens and there would be a stage, and Twilight suddenly became a play ....

Das Kino ist noch halb leer, die Premierengäste unterhalten sich miteinander, viele Filmleute sind darunter, Schauspieler, Regisseure, Designer ... sie alle halten natürlich auch Ausschau nach einem guten Platz. Irgendwie ist die Atmosphäre anders als bei einem normalen Abend im Kino, eher ein wenig wie in einem Theater, und ich wäre nicht verwundert, wenn der Vorhang hochginge und dahinter eine Bühne zum Vorschein käme und Twilight plötzlich ein Theaterstück würde ...

Opening Night

Yesterday night I did something very unusual for me. I left my studio already at 6 pm ( well I came back later, to write my blog, and paint all night, but that is a different story) it was the opening night of Twilight, the film by Marc Wilkins for which I had recently done some artwork. And todays painting is the start of a new series, about this opening night, I will show you impressions of the audience, and I will take you later on with me to the after show party in the famous Kaffee Burger..... so stay tuned. As I painted all night I had some time for a larger version, well for the under-painting of a larger version that is...

Gestern abend habe ich etwas für mich sehr Ungewöhnliches gemacht. Ich habe schon um 18:00 Uhr mein Atelier verlassen, um zur Premiére des Films Twilight von Marc Wilkins ( hier hatte ich ja das Bild für das Plakat gemalt ) zu gehen. Gut, ich bin später wieder zurückgekommen um meinen blog zu schreiben und die Nacht durchzumalen, aber das ist eine andere Geschichte. Und das heutige Bild ist der Beginn einer neuen Serie, über diese Filmpremiére also, ich werde Ihnen Eindrücke aus dem Publikum zeigen und Sie später mitnehmen zur After Show Party ins berühmte Kaffee Burger .... also bleiben Sie dran. Da ich ja die ganze Nacht gemalt habe, hatte ich Zeit eine größere Version des heutigen Bildes anzufangen, na ja, zumindest die Untermalung für eine größere Version.....

The Postcard Collectors

I love to visit little markets, its a good place to find ideas for paintings. Like those two collectors of old postcards, worthless junk to some, for them it is the most precious possession, like in real life.

Kleine Märkte sind ein guter Platz für Ideen aus denen Bilder entstehen. Wie diese beiden Sammler von alten Postkarten. Für manche wertloses Zeug, für diese beiden kostbarer Besitz, wie im echten Leben.

...as yesterday, I tell you, those croissants, they do start to get addictive.

In a French Cafe

Not very far from my studio is a French cafe. They make the best croissants in Berlin. If you taste one, and close your eyes, you could almost imagine yourself being in Paris.

Thank you all for your kind offers for yesterdays painting, the 5ooth blog painting, it has reached a record sum so far .... yesterdays number of visits to my blog was a record too, over 800 viewers....


Nicht weit von meinem Atelier entfernt, ist ein französisches Cafe. Und dort gibt es die besten Croissants von Berlin. Wenn man eines probiert und dabei die Augen schließt, könnte man fast denken, man sei in Paris.

Herzlichen Dank Ihnen allen für Ihre Gebote für das gestrige Bild, das 500ste blog painting, die Gebote haben jetzt schon eine Rekordhöhe erreicht. Und die Anzahl der Besucher auf meinem blog war gestern auch Rekord, über 800 Besucher .....
