Through the eye of a scaffold

I like scaffolds. Now this is a clever attitude to adapt in a town like Berlin, because if you don´t like scaffolds, you are in for a bit of a disappointment, they are everywhere. I like them because they give so many wonderful new views of things one thought to know already.

Ich mag Gerüste. Und das ist auch eine vernünftige Einstellung in einer Stadt wie Berlin, andernfalls könnte es etwas schwierig werden, denn sie sind überall. Mir gefallen sie weil sie einem so viele wunderbare neue Blickausschnitte auf die Dinge geben, die man dachte schon längst zu kennen.

Saturday Night

As I did not spend last weekend in the country as usual, I thought I do the rare thing and accept an invitation to a party. Well it was not any party, but the official release party for the newest edition of the Dummy magazine, the Nr 22. of which and my involvement in it, I have already written in my last post. The place was, not surprisingly the Restaurant Borchardt.

Da ich vergangenes Wochenende nicht wie üblich auf dem Land verbrachte, nahm ich ausnahmsweise die Einladung zu einer Party an. Es war auch nicht irgendeine Party, sondern die offizielle release party for die neue Ausgabe des Dummy Magazins, die Nr. 22 über die und meine Beteiligung daran, ich in meinem letzten Post schon geschrieben habe. Ort des Geschehens war, nicht sehr überraschend, das Restaurant Borchardt.

Dummy Magazine Nr. 22

Today, the Dummy magazine Nr. 22 , a Berlin special, is at the newsagents. The whole magazine is illustrated with more than 100 paintings of mine. I even painted some especially for this magazine like the portrait shown below of society photographer Edgar Herbst. It appears on the special cover of the so called club edition of the magazine, that is distributed exclusively in clubs, restaurants, etc. here in Berlin. I would like to thank Oliver Gehrs, the editor of the Dummy magazine for his vision, the art directors Markus Büsges and Björn Wolf and also Tobias Kruse and Jörg Brüggemann together with everyone else who was involved in realising this edition. And, of course very special thanks go to all my models.

Blue Staircase

I am coming to an end with the film paintings of Die Besucherin by Lola Randl. Whether one of them will be used for a poster I do not know yet. If it will be the case I let you know. Either way if the film comes to the cinemas in April you must see it. It is a wonderful film, a story that moved me deeply, a story told in a very sensitive and uncompromising way. I call todays painting the Blue Staircase, the same title I used for a painting I did exactly 10 years ago in 1999.

Ich komme zum Ende der Filmbilder zu Die Besucherin von Lola Randl. Ob eines davon als Filmplakat verwendet wird, weiß ich noch nicht. Aber falls dem so ist, werde ich davon berichten. Wie auch immer, wenn der Film im April in die Kinos kommt, müssen Sie ihn sich ansehen. Es ist ein wunderschöner Film, die Geschichte hat mich tief bewegt, eine Geschichte erzählt auf eine sehr feinfühlige und kompromisslose Art und Weise. Ich nenne das heutige Bild The Blue Staircase, ein Titel den ich bereits für ein Bild verwendet habe, daß ich genau vor 10 Jahren, Anfang 1999 gemalt habe.

Blue

As much as I indulged in green yesterday, I indulged in blue today. When I started consciously to paint, many many years ago, without thinking that this may be one day my chosen profession, I used a lot of blue, it was my favourite colour. So painting todays picture mainly in blue was a walk down memory lane, and I realised suddenly, I have no favourite colour anymore. I cherish them all, every shade of colour that is possible for the human eye to detect in this amazing world of ours.

Soviel ich gestern in Grün schwelgte, tat ich es heute in Blau. Als ich vor vielen vielen Jahren begann bewusst zu malen, ohne jedoch daran zu denken daß dies eines Tages mein Beruf werden würde, verwendete ich viel Blau, es war damals meine Lieblingsfarbe. Daher brachte das Malen des heutigen Bildes in hauptsächlich Blautönen viele Erinnerungen hoch, und mir wurde plötzlich bewußt, daß ich heute keine Lieblingsfarbe mehr habe. Ich verehre sie alle, jede Schattierung jeder Farbe die für das menschliche Auge zu erkennen ist in dieser erstaunlichen Welt in der wir leben.

The green door

It was an impressive experience to have a whole cinema just for myself, and to see the whole film on a big screen. Many more scenes I discovered which I want to paint, like this one today. The door is not really green, but the lighting in the film is, maybe I even overdid the green a bit, but somehow it just felt right.

Es war eine eindrucksvolle Erfahrung ein ganzes Kino für mich alleine zu haben und den Film auf einer großen Leinwand zu sehen. Ich habe viele weitere Szenen entdeckt die ich malen möchte, so wie diese heute. Die Tür ist nicht wirklich grün, aber die Beleuchtung im Film ist es, vielleicht habe ich es mit dem Grün sogar ein wenig übertrieben aber für mich ist es genau stimmig.

Die Besucherin continues

Today I started to continue the work for a possible poster for Lola Randls film "Die Besucherin". On Wednesday I will be able to see the film in a cinema on a large screen. As I do not like to be in places with many people in it, Lola had the idea to rent a cinema in the afternoon for a private performance, I think that is very civilised of her.

Heute habe ich angefangen an einem Posterentwurf für Lola Randls film "Die Besucherin" weiterzuarbeiten. Diesen Film werde ich mir am Mittwoch in einem Kino auf der großen Leinwand ansehen können. Da ich ja nicht gerne an Orten mit vielen Menschen bin, hatte Lola die Idee ein Kino am Nachmittag für eine private Vorstellung zu mieten, das finde ich äusserst rücksichtsvoll von ihr!

The bar at the Borchardt

Unfortunately I have forgotten the name of the bar man at the Restaurant Borchardt, but I remember that he made me a fantastic tasting cup of coffee, and he served me my favourite French water, in a glass bottle, just as I like it.... but that only seems natural in a place like this. I think I will paint a whole series of this on larger canvases.
Leider ist mir der Name des Barmanns im Restaurant Borchardt entfallen, aber ich habe den Kaffee den er mir machte, in bester Erinnerung, so delikat war er. Außerdem servierte er mir mein Lieblingswasser, in einer Glasflasche, so wie ich es mag ... aber das versteht sich ja eigentlich von selbst an so einem Platz wie diesem. Ich glaube ich werde hiervon eine Serie mit größeren Formaten malen.

Those pink shoes

Those pink shoes caught my attention in the shop window of a famous French designer, more known for bags and suitcases, leather belts and briefcases, and I am sure I missed about 100 other things to mention ..... but the colour of those shoes must have been the strongest colour on Friedrichstrasse on that day.

Diese pinkfarbenen Schuhe fielen mir sofort ins Auge als ich sie im Schaufenster eines berühmten französischen Labels sah, dieses ist eigentlich mehr bekannt für seine Taschen und Koffer, Ledergürtel und Brieftaschen, und jetzt habe ich sicher noch mindestens hundert andere Sachen vergessen aufzuzählen ... aber die Farbe dieser Schuhe muss an diesem Tag die stärkste Farbe in der Friedrichstrasse gewesen sein.

March light on Friedrichstrasse

It seems to me that I did not go for a walk since ages. Today the light in Friedrichstrasse had its play with things. Still the coldness of winter, but sometimes the promise of spring, a confusing mix, creating a near abstract pattern of a scene that is so familiar.

Es kommt mir vor, als ob ich schon ewig keinen meiner Spaziergänge mehr gemacht hätte. Heute trieb das Licht in der Friedrichstrasse sein eigenes Spiel mit den Dingen. Die Kälte des Winters ist noch da, aber manchmal blitzt die Verheissung des Frühlings hervor, ein verwirrender Mix, der ein fast abstraktes Muster einer bekannten Szene schafft.

A very personal still life, the setting is in my apartment. What else did I do today, I finished another painting, I only can show you a detail yet as it is used for a secret mission, but soon around the 20th of March the veil will be lifted.

Afternoon Tea

My favourite time of day to visit the Restaurant Borchardt is the early evening. You should try it. It is still quiet there then, the waiters preparing for what is to come. One or two guests, friends of the house dropping in for a chat, a coffee at the bar. Have a tea like this lady in todays painting, or a glass of champagne and enjoy that very special atmosphere of the place. The high ceiling, the golden brass, the marble columns, the red benches, that is the nearest you can get to Paris, in Berlin.

Am liebsten gehe ich zur blauen Stunde, also am frühen Abend ins Restaurant Borchardt. Kann ich empfehlen. Es ist dann nämlich noch ruhig dort, das Personal bereitet sich vor, auf was der Abend bringen wird. Ein oder zwei Gäste, Freunde des Hauses, die kurz vorbeischauen, auf einen Kaffee an der Bar. Trinken Sie doch auch einen Tee, so wie diese Dame im heutigen Bild, oder ein Glas Champagner, und geniessen Sie die ganz spezielle Atmosphäre dieses Ortes. Die hohen Decken, das goldene Messing, die Marmorsäulen und roten Bänke, näher kommt man Paris nicht, in Berlin.

All right, ever since I mentioned a sheep yesterday, I got tons of emails asking about it. I am afraid my description yesterday was a bit misleading. The sheep is in fact really a man, dressed as a sheep. It is Fabian, a writer, he likes to dress as a sheep. Now that is not so unusual in Berlin that people dress as animals. Nobody really thinks very much about it, except maybe the real animals. They tend to look a bit irritated, and wonder what those two legged creatures are doing, all dressed up like that.

Also, seit ich gestern ein Schaf erwähnt habe, bekam ich haufenweise Emails diesbezüglich. Ich fürchte meine Beschreibung gestern war ein bisschen irreführend. Das Schaf ist nämlich ein junger Mann, der als Schaf gekleidet war, fürs Contributor Bild. Er heisst Fabian, ein Schriftsteller, der sich gern als Schaf anzieht. Das ist aber in Berlin garnicht so ungewöhnlich, hier laufen dauernd als Tiere verkleidete Menschen rum. Das fällt schon kaum mehr jemandem auf, ausser vielleicht den echten Tieren. Sie schauen doch durchaus etwas irritiert und wundern sich, was diese zweibeinigen Kreaturen wohl in dieser Aufmachung im Sinn haben,

Edwards friends

As the next issue of the Dummy magazine will be fully illustrated with my paintings (even some ads will be using a painting of mine) it seemed only logical that for the page introducing all the contributors a painting had to be made too. So, when all of them arrived at my studio - 11 people, one baby and a sheep - I suddenly realised, that this was going to be a very daunting task indeed. The deadline comes nearer and nearer ... so I settled for a simple drawing (and got btw.out of having to paint a self portrait). Nevertheless, for todays painting I used as my model Jörg , he is a photographer and photo editor at the Dummy magazine and, for the last weeks was my faithful driver and chief-coordinator.

Da die nächste Ausgabe des Dummy Magazins komplett mit meinen Bildern illustriert sein wird (sogar ein paar Anzeigen verwenden Bilder von mir) schien es nur logisch, dass für die Seite auf der alle contributors vorgestellt werden, auch ein Bild gemalt werden sollte. Als dann alle an diesem Heft Mitwirkenden - 11 Erwachsene, 1 Baby und´n Schaf - in meinem Atelier eintrafen, realisierte ich plötzlich, dass das in der Tat eine größere Herausforderung werden würde. Die deadline kommt jedoch näher und näher .... daher entschloss ich mich für eine einfache Zeichnung (und kam so auch noch darum herum ein Selbstportrait malen zu müssen). Nichtsdestotrotz habe ich für das heutige Bild Jörg als Model gewählt, er ist Photograph und Photo Editor beim Dummy Magazin und war in den letzten Wochen mein geschätzter Fahrer und Chef-Koordinator.
